  • Share any advice or encouragement you have for your peers.
  • What did you learn about nonverbal and verbal messages by reading your classmate’s post?

  • Identify at least three guidelines for effective verbal communication.
  1. It  is important to speak in terms that are easy for all listeners to  understand instead of using large vocabulary. This will ensure that what  you are saying is being comprehended correctly.
  2. Thinking before you speak is very important because it can help you to avoid awkward pauses or using fill words such as “um”.
  3. A  good tip is to paraphrase what others are saying to you back to them to  show that you are actively listening. It shows that you care about what  they are saying.
  • Identify at least three guidelines for effective nonverbal communication.
  1.  When  giving speeches it is important to make eye contact with your audience.  Make sure not to focus on just one person or to look down. It is also  important to make eye contact when you are having a one-on-one  conversation. It shows that you are listening and interested in the  conversation.
  2. Using  signals to add meaning is a good non-verbal skill that also ties in  with verbal communication. Standing up tall, straight, and with your  shoulders back shows confidence.
  3.  Your facial expressions also can influence a speech as well as your  daily conversations. They can help get people’s attention as well as  relay your emotions regarding what you are speaking about.
  • Discuss two areas you need to consider about the verbal delivery of your presentation.
  1. The  biggest area I need to consider about the verbal delivery of my  presentation is making sure that I know ahead of time exactly what I  would like to say. I need to do this to avoid using filler words because  I am terrible about saying “um” or “so” when going from one thought to  another.
  2. I  also think I will need to slow myself down. I get incredibly nervous  when giving any kind of speech. In the past, I have started off at a  normal pace and then found myself talking extremely fast towards the end  to get through the speech.
  • Give two examples of moments in your presentation when you might use nonverbals to increase the impact of your verbal message.
  1. As  I mentioned above, I am extremely nervous when giving speeches. I will  definitely want to make sure my posture makes me look confident when  giving my speech.
  2. I  also think I will use my facial expressions to show how enthusiastic I  am about the topic that I am speaking on. If my face shows how much it  means to me, people may listen better or take more information in.
